Thoughts & Ideas

Alice in Winterberry and Design Fangirling

February 28, 2020 Kim White
My homage to Anna Rifle Bond

My homage to Anna Rifle Bond

My sweet girl is turning 7 years old in April. I can hardly believe it. Since she’s getting to the (her words) “I’m not a princess anymore, I’m a rebel” stage, I feel like this is my last opportunity to have an Alice in Wonderland themed party. Since her name is Alice, it comes with the territory. Last year we skipped a birthday party in favor of a family trip to Disney World where she got to meet the real Alice. We discussed it then: next year we’ll have an Alice tea party for your birthday.

It’s next year… and now I’ve got all sorts of ideas rolling around in my head about what to do with this party. Being a designer, invitations always come first. However, this time, fabric came first. Let me explain: one of my most favorite design companies, Rifle Paper Co., came out with their version of the classic Lewis Carrol story. Alice has many copies of the book, but this one is by far my favorite. My house is full of Rifle Paper Co. works so I had to have this one as soon as they released it. I once went to visit a new potential printer and saw some of their cards on press. I nearly hyperventilated. I am that much of a fan. Sadly, the pressman wouldn’t let me keep any of the extras.

Little did I know, Rifle Paper Co. and Cotton + Steel collaborated on a fabric collection as well. I had to restrain myself from purchasing every bolt in all the colorways. I did, however, end up with quite a bit of the navy Alice pattern and the coordinating black and white Cheshire stripe. I’ll use them as table runners and napkins for the party, and whatever else I can come up with.

Now, I am a big stickler for not copying another designer’s work. I had a friend once ask me to copy another logo exactly to use for her business—I refused. Inspiration is great but copying is a different story. The invitations I created for this party is right up to that line, but hopefully more on the inspiration side. I used Anna Rifle Bond’s illustrations and redrew them pretty much as they were. Not cool if I were to sell this design. I am not—it’s just for me and my girl. It’s my salute to Rifle Paper Co. and that’s why I’m linking to them as much as possible. I’m using the fabric as the inspiration for the entire party. I love that it’s girly enough but not too princess-ey. Just enough rebel.

Rifle Paper Co. has its own line of stationery, planners, shoes and accessories, home décor and more. I have some of their giftwrap as well and you’d better know you’re loved if you receive a gift from me and it comes wrapped in one of these precious papers. Please visit their site and show them some love… and grab me a pair of those shoes while you’re there.

Teresa Earnest Socialites

Y’all, I had THE BEST TIME yesterday going to a Teresa Earnest Social brunch hosted here in Savannah at The Fitzroy. Teresa is an incredibly talented photographer-turned-social-media-maven and gathered a group of women for her first social to talk about how to take our businesses to the next level. Plus she took headshots for each of us… mine will be revealed soon, but suffice it to say if I don’t hate it, she’s phenomenal.

Anyone who knows me well, knows that group settings where we have to talk about ourselves is my living nightmare. Lookup extroverted introvert and my picture (probably taken by Teresa) will be there. I have heart palpitations just thinking about public speaking. But Teresa is so friendly, so gregarious and so stinkin’ funny that she makes everyone feel at ease. I met her a few years ago when she did a family photo shoot as a fundraiser for our kids’ middle school chorus program and instantly loved her. It has been an absolute pleasure to watch her star rise. Check out her instagram and just LOOK at all the cool stuff she’s doing.

The Fitzroy was the perfect brunch setting, and we sat in a private room upstairs. I had a time choosing but the Smashed Avocado had me at avocado. I can’t ever pass it up. Everyone’s plates looked so amazing, though, I don’t think anyone could’ve gone wrong. And mimosas… swoon. Just check out some of Teresa’s photos of this place:

Happy Anniversary, Mom and Dad!

Saturday, June 10th was my parents’ 51st anniversary. I am grateful to them for so many things, but especially for the wonderful examples they’ve been as parents and partners. Fifty-one years is an unimaginable time to look at the same face every day, but they make it seem effortless.

This year, I brought over a bottle of Prosecco for mimosas so we could toast to the next 51 years. Last year, however, was the BIG celebration. They booked a cruise for the whole family (eleven of us in total) on the Disney Dream. Since summertime is such a crazy time with all of the kids’ different school schedules, we chose to go for a New Year’s trip when everyone was off for Christmas break. That meant we had plenty of time to read blogs, watch videos, and prepare for the trip beforehand. One of the things we learned was that EVERYONE decorates their cabin door. I knew I wanted to do a special 50th anniversary edition for my parents. Of course, I waited till the last minute to do anything—like the day before we drove to Port Canaveral.

While I had the Cricut out anyway, I figured I’d make a t-shirt for Alice to wear. One turned into several with leggings to match. I can't stop myself.

Minnie ears for days.

You know we Southerners will monogram anything that’s not nailed down. Being Disney themed, I made hers with Minnie ears. I think Alice liked her shirts... especially when paired with a sparkly, twirly tutu.

Rocking chair for Alice

April 6, 2018 Kim White
Oh, how I love a rocking chair on a porch.

Oh, how I love a rocking chair on a porch.

So there’s this rocking chair I have held onto for a while. By a while, I mean 15 or more years.

When my oldest girl was a baby, I went to one of those unfinished furniture places on a whim and bought this sweet little rocking chair with high hopes of creating an heirloom piece that she would treasure forever. Little did I know as a first time mother creating the perfect heirloom piece takes time... time that I did not have. Not to mention I have a bit of a problem with perfectionism. Which is to say that unless I have a VERY CLEAR VISION of what I want to create, my perfectionism kicks in and I am stunted and do nothing. Which is what happened all those years ago.

Fast forward through 15 years and two more babies and I’ve relaxed a bit in my thinking. I don’t need to have a clear vision or a perfect heirloom piece. I just want a rocking chair that my littlest can use and that's not taking up space and collecting dust in the garage. I have a pretty impressive collection of chalk paint (Annie Sloan, I cannot quit you) and I am in complete love with Paris Grey so a few coats of paint and the rocking chair was bare no more.

Not necessarily to make it heirloom-worthy, but I felt this needed her name on it as well so with my tiniest paintbrush and some vintage white, Alice’s name was added. I’m not sure if she’s in love with it or not, but I love this little chair. No more panicking over WHAT to paint... just paint. I’ve learned that if I just give myself the space to make a mistake, art happens. This chair may not be my most complicated or artistic work, but I love it all the same.
